ProVention held a Conference 'Solidarity and Opportunity: The Potential of Insurance for Disaster Risk Management in Developing Countries' on 21 October 2004 at the Swiss Re Centre for Global Dialogue in Zurich. Due to the high level of interest in the specific field of micro-insurance and the opportunity to convene a unique group of experts and practitioners, the scope of the event was further expanded through a second day Workshop 'Experiences in Micro-Insurance', held 22 October 2004 at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, also in Zurich.
The objective of these events was to increase the interest and involvement of private sector actors in global disaster reduction efforts. The Conference brought together leading policy makers, academics, and practitioners from both business and the development & disaster reduction community who share a common interest and concern in promoting the use of disaster risk management in developing countries. Forums were created to share knowledge, exchange views and experiences, promote good practice and innovations, and create opportunities for linkages and partnerships. Theory was linked to practice, examining both global and local approaches to risk sharing.
This document presents the Conference proceedings and a report of the findings and conclusions of the Workshop.
