2009 ProVention Forum
Organized in partnership with UN/ISDR and the World Bank on 13-15 May 2009, the 2009 Forum will foster cross-disciplinary and cross-regional linkages and learning by bringing ProVention partners and relevant stakeholders together from around the globe.
Description
The ProVention Forum provides an opportunity for Consortium partners and invited participants to meet and dialogue on risk issues, address critical priorities in disaster risk management and catalyse new ideas and collaborative initiatives to help drive the global agenda on disaster reduction.
The role and potential of ProVention as a forum for policy dialogue and debate on risk issues has been highlighted consistently by partners as a primary value of the ProVention Consortium. Seeking to emphasise this aspect, in 2005 ProVention initiated an annual ProVention Forum open to Consortium partners and other invited individuals or organisations.
While it is necessary to keep participation in the Forum event limited to a selected group, ProVention hopes that others who are interested in the wider dialogue on risk reduction and incentives will find some value in the Forum resources that are shared on this site.

In February 2007, ProVention hosted its third annual ProVention Forum in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania (read the Forum report). The 2007 Forum focused on the central theme of ‘Making Disaster Risk Reduction Work’ and highlighted the practical experiences and challenges faced by ProVention partners in reducing vulnerability and enhancing resilience of the communities they work with. Regional Forums, November & December 2006, Dakar, Nairobi, Johannesburg
To influence policy dialogue and advance the Africa risk reduction agenda with local perspectives, ProVention held three forums in Dakar (report), Johannesburg (report), and Nairobi (report), in November and December 2006. Organised in partnership with ActionAid, ENDA Tiers-Monde and the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the forums mainly gathered community-based organisations, international NGOs, local government, research and training institutions and the Red Cross / Red Crescent movement, whose work effectively reduced the risks and impacts of disasters upon local communities on the African continent. Participants critically reflected on the scope of disaster risk reduction (DRR) in Africa. They discussed effective and replicable methods, approaches and practices for DRR, that can be developed and ‘owned’ by affected or at-risk communities.
