South African Forum on Local Perspectives on Disaster Risk Reduction

Content:

To influence policy dialogue and advance the Africa risk reduction agenda with local perspectives, ProVention held three forums in Dakar, Johannesburg, and Nairobi in November and December 2006. The Southern Africa Forum was hosted on 21-22 November 2006 by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in Johannesburg, South Africa. More than 25 participants underlined the primordial role of local communities in defining the hazards and risks they are faced with. They stressed the need to keep a flexible view on risk definition reflecting the evolving African multi-hazard context and argued for a rapprochement between the climate change and disaster risk communities.
