ProVention History
The ProVention Consortium was created in 2000 to provide a forum for dialogue and catalysing new ideas and collaborative initiatives on disaster risk reduction. Hosted first by the World Bank and then by the IFRC, ProVention included a broad and active set of humanitarian and development, from governments, UN agencies, the Red Cross Red Crescent, civil society, academia, and the private sector.
ProVention has been widely recognised for its role in brokering links among diverse actors. In its ten run between 2000 and 2010, many of ProVention’s original goals to mainstream attention to disaster risk reduction were successfully attained by partner organizations. ProVention-inspired initiatives live on in the work of:
- the IFRC, including the Global Disaster Preparedness Center and Climate
Centre - the World Bank’s Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR)
- the Global Network of Civil Society Organisations for Disaster Reduction (GNDR)
- UN-ISDR and Prevention Web
- the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA)
- the Active Learning Network for Accountability and Performance
(ALNAP) - and many other partners
This website highlights the resources that have been developed through ProVention projects and related partners initiatives. It is hoped that the resources on this site will continue to be useful in improving policy and practice and advancing the disaster risk reduction agenda.

Community Disaster Resilience Fund (CDRF)
The test of the CDRF in India is currently underway in partnership with GROOTS and under the umbrella of the recently established National Alliance for Disaster Risk Reduction (NADRR). The CDRF is a grant-based resource channel to support community-based organizations, local governments, and grassroots organizations to initiate DRR initiatives in their own communities. AURAN seminar at World Urban Forum
ProVention and the AURAN partners hosted a seminar at the World Urban Forum in Nanjing, China in November 2008 on 'Addressing Urban risk in Africa: local perspectives'. The session demonstrated that the rapidly growing urban population in Africa has already begun to reshape the geography of disaster risk and scope for reducing that risk. Read more...
